This year's Iceland Airwaves festival came at a good time - with the economy in meltdown and confused Icelanders adjusting to hard financial times, the proud country of ice and fire needed to let its long hair down, which it did in true spectacular Icelandic style. Reykjavik, with its steely grey sky and tiny town centre, its like a mini Seattle in mid-winter, and this year the capital, which is home to two thirds of Iceland's population of just 300,000, was overrun with a bevy of Iceland's very beautiful and an international crowd of music lovers, who all sought refuge from the cold in the warm and hazy venues and bars hosting an inconceivably huge array of music. Among the bands playing the festival this year...CSS, Vampire Weekend, Junior Boys, White Denim, Boy Crisis, Simian Mobile Disco, Pnau, Crystal Castles, Yelle, Florence and the Machine, and The Young Knives (between many, many Icelandic local bands and DJ's)

America has invaded the gilged chambers and sculpted gardens of the Chateau de Versailles in the form of an exhibition by the American artist Jeff Koons. Versailles in recent years has displayed only a few select works of contemporary artists. The exhibition of the 17 Koons sculptures marks the first that the chateau has organized so ambitious a retrospective of one contemporary artist. The exhibit, which opened on Wednesday, will continue until Dec. 14th.

Dramatic and beautiful. Dull Flame of Desire sees Bjork accompanied on vocals by Anthony Hegarty from Anthony & The Johnsons - to be released on September 22nd. The video is out, and you can watch it here. Anthony joined Bjork onstage at her recent Hammersmith live shows and sang with her to showstopping effect. This song features lyrics taken from a translation of a poem by Fyodor Tyutchev as it appears in the film "Stalker" by Andrei Tarkovsky.

An experimental sale of new works by artist Damien Hirst at Sotheby's auction house tonight surpassed expectations when it raised more than £70M ($125M). Buyers appeared unfazed by fears over the global banking system as they spent freely. The top lot was "The Golden Calf", a 600kg bull submerged in formaldehyde, crowned by a solid 18k gold disk and whose hooves and horns are also cast in solid 18k, sold for £10.3M, a record for the artist at auction. "The Kingdom", one of Hirst's signature shark formaldehyde works, sold for £9.6M. The sale continues tomorrow, Tuesday, when the house expect to sell up to £36M. Damien sold his "For The Love of God", a £50M cast in platinum and diamond-encrusted skull last year. Art and commerce usually go together, but is this art or strictly commerce?

Nagi Noda Passes Away

Sad news. The multitalented artist/director leaves behind an impressive legacy of bizarre, incredible and playful work. The Japanese artist behind groundbreaking music videos and spots passed away on Sunday, September 7th. Noda's body of work also included short films, sculpture and even character art like Hanpanda (with her on pictures above), the half panda / half other beast who appeared in her art exhibits and was also part of a collaboration with LA/NY fashion brand Libertine.

Télépathique opening for Tricky NYC

Tricky, the English trip-hop pioneer played at the Fillmore New York on Thursday night on his first tour after 5 years. The opening band, Télépathique, is Brazilian, from Sao Paulo, and played slyly metamorphosing dance music: electro to dance-rock to techno to funk, as Erico Theobaldo moved among turntables, laptops, and a drum kit, Mylene, the band's singer, arrived onstage in a red dress. The band's blithe grooves and tales of desire link it to the knowing internationalist hedonism of CSS, from Brazil, and the Brazilian Girls, from NYC, with plenty of its own smart twists. Just last week, as i was listening to KCRW, the song "Eu Gosto" played and caught my attention. Télépathique Last Time on Earth was released August 5th.

"to take graffiti out of its predominantly urban context and apply it to the ancient and permanent walls of an historic rural castle in Scotland"

so i went deeper into finding explanations or a statement, and nothing really. even thou the castle is to be re-harled within the next three years...

This Midwestern (Milwaukee, WI) foursome brings sheets of guitar alternately diaphanous and feedback-drenched, diffident and sweet male/female vocals buried so low in the mix they might as well not be singing actual words and an oddly prominent drummer are the main tools of their trade.

denis kamioka, aka cisma, has directed several animation films for advertising. "handmade" is his debut short film, and his first live action project. the film was shot in brazil and post-produced in barcelona. it makes use of unusual symbols to describe how one feels at the beginning and at the end of a relationship. lovefoxxx from the band CSS is the main actress, DP by pierre de kerchove, and i gave them a little help by doing on set photography for a later use on the press kit (above). cisma's website is also out, and it looks amazing.

Fischerspooner's new album " The Best Revenge " is out. It presents a new ( yet still quite familiar ) sound combining synthetic and real instruments. The result is really organic and subtle . Dusan shot it, I did the tech & retouching. It was a good day listening to good music at Sun Studios, and we all had our share of paint all over ( my shoes still have green and blue spots ). Casey was wearing a custom made leather jacket from Stefano Pilati for YSL that eventually got trashed with all that latex paint. The album is out through Maison Kitsune.

And...they are playing in Brazil again, nothing set on stone, but most likely end of this year.

Its no news american photographer William Eggleston is greater then great...one of my favorite amongst so many. Born in 1939, he mastered the art of color photography to a level i believe no one else can reach. He has a unique ability to find beauty, and stricking displays of color, in ordinary scenes. "He sees the complexity and beauty of the mundane world, compelling, honest, beautiful, and unsparing photographs...no subject is fuller of implications than the mundane world." I was lucky enough to see some of his prints up close, and from that day on i've been dreaming about having one close to me.

Michael Goundry ( Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ) has a show at Deitch Projects on Wooster Street. He recreated the main set for the film " Be Kind Rewind " and added other smaller ones such a doctor's clinic, a street scene and a regular NY apartment. Visitors can do a short film workshop, and use props and wardrobe from the actual film to shoot on a mini dv, with no second takes, and edited on the actual camera. All the movies are then showed at the gallery. Goundry himself states his intentions are not to teach how to make a film, quite the contrary " I am hoping to create a network of creativity and communication that is guaranteed to be free and independent from any commercial institution ". It is up until march 22nd.

Maya Deren, born in Kiev 1917, was a great american avant garde filmmaker. In New York, around the early 1940s she used some of the inheritance from her father to buy a used bolex 16mm camera. She then filmed " Meshes in the Afternoon", one of the seminal american avant garde films. Inspired by the Surrealists and Dada ( her circle of friends included Breton, Duchamp and Anaïs Nin ) She did mostly artistic films, with no regard to a more commercial approach ( she bragged once " I make my pictures for what Hollywood spends on lipstick " ). "The Very Eye of the Night " is pictured above, with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in 1952. She died in 1961, at age of 44, her ashes were scattered in Japan at Mount Fuji.

Lately I've been in love with Monica Vitti. Just watched L'Avventura ( still above ) she delivers a insanely cool & nonchalant performance. Feels like a million dollars.

Michelangelo Antonioni is credited with shaping her career, placing her as a warm human character, althought charmingly exquisite, on his existential films. I personally prefer this first films of her career from the light comedy she did afterwards with Mario Monicelli and Luciano Salce. Neverthless is a presence that inspires.

She is also in La Notte ( with Mastroianni ) and L'Eclisse.

Fantastic Francesca...i wish i could meet her but i can't. American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) best known for b&w pictures of female models, nude, blurred, and usually with their faces obscured while merging with their surroundings...she also used to take self-portraits in the same manner. Her work call up a host of contradictions. Years after her suicide at age 22 in NY, her works is still talked about, inspiring many contemporary artists, and she is still subject of art exhibits and books.

...went a bit furter with knowing more about Lykke Li's - Little Bit music video, because the photography is so fantastic, and Mattias Montero (DOP) signs it off. Funny he also did the photography for Bat For Lashes' Whats a Girl To Do video. Only my two favourite videos in the past month...His website holds other big names, between music videos and ads, always impecable. Worth taking a look.

Lykke Li will be huge, it's not even a question. The first single Little Bit came to me via email (the video) as a reference for a photo shoot im planning for next week. OK. I love the video! The photography is impressive. The thing is...i got into the music more than the image, and not to say the image is not as brilliant as the sound. I finally got her entire album Youth Novel and im loving every second of it. Copping that lo-fi-but-not-too-lo-fi pop sound popularized by Peter Bjorn & John, Little Bit is a lesson in minimalist pop blilliance. Li bears her heart and soul into it. You better believe she'll pull some serious pop star money from whatever major label ends up winning her hand.

Picture this. Your mobile beeps, it's an email from your boyfriend/girlfriend. In a hideously self-absorbed message about human emotion, he/she dumps you electronically, saying it hurts him/her more than you. And signs off: "take care of yourself." You're heartbroken.

Sophie Calle is one of France's best-known living conceptual artists. She actually got this email and thought of its potential as art, asking 100 women to read it - and became the star of the Venice Biennale. At first it was therapy; then art took over. "After a month i felt better. There was no suffering. It worked. The project had replaced the man." She feared he might come back seeking a reconcilliation, which would have ruined the whole thing.

Take Care of Yourself is her second piece about a partner. The first dumping piece is called Exquisite Pain.

Sophie's other projects include The Address Book. She found a man's telephone book, called the people listed in it to discuss the owner, and then reported the observations. Also, The Hotel, Calle posed as the chambermaid in a Venice pensione to investigate the lives of strangers through their personal possessions and habits. In the guests' absence, she photographed their personal belongings and took notes from the observations. Also, after a seven-year absence from Paris, feeling lost in her own city she began following people, creating voyeuristic situations in which she trailed her random subjects and then reported on what she found in the photographs, notations, and fictionalized accounts of their lives.

Calle will continue to deal with what annoys and hurts her by turning it into a game. Her latest project is spotting mistakes in journalists' articles about her art. "I thought to myself, maybe there's material in taking the errors and enacting the works just as they are described by the journalists? So if a journalist mistakenly said I'd done a project with deaf people, I'd have to do a project with deaf people."

Iron & Wine's Shepherd's Dog...

Haven't noticed that much before, but now...since i've been in a mellower mood i am really into it.

This is the most diverse and progressive album yet, a deft transition to a very different sound that explores new territory while preserving the best aspects of Beam's earlier recordings. It's the kind of record that keeps pulling you back with it's dreamlike flow and attention to detail.

I keep listening to "Innocent Bones" over and over...It reminds me of Sufjan Stevens more than ever.

I found this article on Dougal Wilson, the video's director, where he describes all the experiences they've had while shooting whats a girl to do. Aside all the funny and disastrous things that happened, at the end, they basically shot the video underexposed and had to go back and re-shot it all over again. Against all odds, the video came out brilliant.
